ANDRÉ KOSTOLANY, also known as the “Stock Market Guru” back in his day, was one of the last great brokers. Even at the age of 80, hardly anyone could hold a candle to him when it came to the stock market. In 1990 I was lucky and honoured to invite him to my home town, to organise a joint presentation with him (number of visitors: 900!). He explained to me that to be successful, a broker needs: “THOUGHTS, PATIENCE, MONEY!” The latter you clearly need to invest, the second does away with the idea of making fast money and the first one means that you need YOUR OWN THOUGHTS! This also matches my experiences. In this field you also have to have the courage to think for yourself. I guarantee you, if you follow the crowd, you will reach a point you don’t want to reach. And another thing, there is no need for you to avoid the stock market.
Shares or share funds are NOT THE WORK OF THE DEVIL, not at all. The stock market is an institution, that helps companies to raise money for their ideas and visions. Many existing, as well as yet-to-be-created jobs depend on it. And a share is simply a way of participating in such a company, no more, no less. That is why the gambling comparison doesn’t fit at all, even though it may seem convincing on occasion. The times of extreme peaks are usually accompanied by that great human weakness named greed.
These are the times when many people run around frothing at the mouth and ignoring other good, human qualities such as respecting others, loyalty, love, solidarity, faithfulness etc. just to become a puppet of money and power. And of course there is the other extreme: a time when everything seems to break down, a time of pure terror, a time of panic and depression, when an individual seems unable to survive, a time when many people give up more than just hope! Sooner or later, all these extremes are scaled down to more sensible dimensions.
